Gala Sausage Roll

Nigeria's iconic portable sausage roll snack, filled with seasoned beef and wrapped in flaky pastry, a street food staple since 1962.

The Gala sausage roll is one of Nigeria's most iconic portable snacks, with a legacy dating back to 1962 when UAC Foods first introduced it to the streets of Lagos. Originally designed as an affordable on-the-go food for Nigeria's growing urban workforce, it quickly became synonymous with street vending, especially during Lagos's notorious traffic jams. The Gala name became so culturally entrenched that it's now used generically to describe all sausage rolls in the region. Typically filled with seasoned beef and wrapped in a flaky pastry shell, it is sold for ₦50–₦200 ($0.03-$0.13 USD) and commonly paired with La Casera, a local apple-flavored soda. Over time, competitors like Bigi and SuperBite emerged, but Gala maintained cultural dominance. Its portability, affordability, and nostalgic value cement its place in Nigerian food culture. Today, it's not just a snack—it's a symbol of resilience, convenience, and urban identity.
