Troy Mini Dog

Tiny hot dog in a three-inch roll, topped with spicy meat sauce, chopped onions, and mustard, a regional style from Troy, New York.

The Troy Mini Dog is an upstate New York specialty centered around the city of Troy, just north of Albany. These small, three-inch hot dogs are served in equally tiny buns and typically topped with a spiced meat sauce, mustard, and chopped onions. The mini dog tradition dates back to the 1920s and is often linked to immigrant-owned lunch counters like Famous Lunch and Hot Dog Charlie’s, which still serve them today. The meat sauce is finely ground and slightly tangy—distinct from Michigan-style sauce, though often confused with it. Their small size makes them perfect for ordering by the dozen, often served on trays like sliders. More than a novelty, they’re a nostalgic comfort food for generations of Capital Region residents.
