Sloppy Dog

Hot dog topped with sloppy joe meat and cheese, a style found in Florida.

The Sloppy Dog is a playful spin on the classic Sloppy Joe, merging two American comfort foods into one gloriously messy bite. It typically features a hot dog topped with a generous helping of seasoned ground beef in tomato-based sauce, often with diced onions and cheese. While not tied to a specific city, it’s found in diners and concession stands across the U.S., especially in the Midwest and South. The exact origins are hard to pin down, likely emerging from homes and restaurants looking to reinvent leftovers or bulk up a simple dog. Its appeal lies in its indulgent, nostalgic flavor and total lack of pretension. It’s not a dog you eat delicately—it’s a roll-up-your-sleeves situation.
