Scrambled Dog

Chopped hot dog served in chili with pickles, onions, and oyster crackers, a specialty of Columbus, Georgia; cheese or sour cream optional.

The Scrambled Dog is a chaotic, fork-and-knife Southern masterpiece born in Columbus, Georgia. Invented at Dinglewood Pharmacy by “Lt. Stevens” in the 1950s, it’s a chopped-up hot dog served over a bun and smothered in chili, mustard, onions, pickles, and sometimes cheese or oyster crackers. It’s famously messy—more casserole than classic handheld dog—and served in a boat-style tray. What started as a clever way to use hot dogs economically became a cult favorite across Georgia and parts of Alabama. Locals swear by it as a comfort food icon, and it remains deeply rooted in Columbus culinary lore. It’s not elegant—but it is legendary.
