Fish Cake Hot Dog

Hot dog topped with a split, fried fish cake (cod/potato) and tangy pepper hash, often with spicy mustard, a Philadelphia specialty.

The Fish Cake Hot Dog is a hyper-regional specialty mostly found in parts of New Jersey, particularly in the coastal city of Paterson. It features a standard hot dog tucked into a bun alongside a slice of fried fish cake—usually made from cod or whiting and heavily seasoned. This pairing is a relic of old-school lunch counters and food carts from mid-20th-century immigrant communities, where mixing inexpensive proteins was common. The dish reflects a working-class mashup of land and sea that’s uniquely Jersey. Often served with ketchup, mustard, or tartar sauce, it’s an unexpected combination that has persisted thanks to local tradition and nostalgia. While rarer today, it survives in a handful of old diners and takeout spots.
