Papaya Dog

Sabrett beef hot dog served with mustard, sauerkraut, and a sweet red onion sauce, popularized by Papaya King in NYC.

The Papaya Dog is a uniquely New York phenomenon, not defined by its toppings but by its setting—fast-food joints that pair hot dogs with tropical fruit drinks, especially papaya juice. This combo originated in the 1930s with Gray’s Papaya and Papaya King, aiming to offer cheap, satisfying meals during the Great Depression. The hot dogs themselves are typically grilled or griddled all-beef franks, served in a soft bun and topped with mustard, sauerkraut, or the classic NYC onion sauce. What sets the Papaya Dog apart is the cultural ritual: hot dog in one hand, icy papaya drink in the other. The chain-style branding gave rise to many imitators, creating a genre of New York street food institutions. It’s fast, nostalgic, and unmistakably urban.
