New York Dog (New York Style Hot Dog)

Beef hot dog boiled in seasoned water, served with sauerkraut or onion relish and spicy brown mustard, a New York City classic.

The New York Dog is one of the most iconic hot dog styles in the world, famously sold from street carts and delis across the five boroughs. It typically features a natural-casing all-beef hot dog, either boiled or grilled, tucked into a soft bun and topped with yellow mustard and a generous helping of sauerkraut or a tangy onion sauce simmered in tomato paste and spices. This combination has roots in Eastern European immigrant traditions and became popular in the early 20th century as pushcarts and vendors proliferated. Sabrett and Hebrew National are two of the best-known purveyors of the classic NYC-style dog. Fast, cheap, and portable, it’s long been fuel for busy New Yorkers on the move. No frills—just tradition, flavor, and grit in a bun.
