Katsu Dog

Panko-fried sausage, tonkatsu sauce, and shredded cabbage, a Japanese style.

The Katsu Dog is a Japanese-inspired fusion hot dog that swaps the traditional bare sausage for a breaded one – and in some instances a deep-fried pork or chicken cutlet (tonkatsu or chicken katsu). It’s typically served in a bun and topped with shredded cabbage, Japanese mayo, and tangy tonkatsu sauce—a thick, sweet-savory condiment similar to Worcestershire. Originating from Japanese food stalls and fusion cafes, this style blends the format of a Western hot dog with the flavor profile of a katsu sando. The result is crunchy, rich, and umami-packed. It’s gained popularity in cities with large Japanese populations and is often found on the menus of Asian-fusion food trucks. This is a hot dog that crunches back.
