Corn Dog

Skewered hot dog dipped in cornmeal batter and fried crisp; a U.S. fair staple. Variants include hand-dipped, foot-long, and brand-specific styles.

The Corn Dog is a deep-fried American classic, born out of state fair culture and Depression-era creativity. Though multiple vendors claim to have invented it, the most widely accepted origin points to the 1930s or early 1940s, with popularization at the Texas State Fair and later by Pronto Pup vendors. It features a hot dog skewered on a stick, dipped in a slightly sweet cornmeal batter, and fried until golden and crisp. The portable, crispy shell and savory center made it a favorite at fairs, carnivals, and amusement parks across the U.S. Its nostalgic appeal has led to countless variations, including cheese-filled, spicy, or bite-sized versions. The corn dog remains one of America’s most beloved and recognizable street foods.
