Sausage Sizzle

Grilled sausage served on a slice of bread with grilled onions and tomato or barbecue sauce, an Australian staple.

The Sausage Sizzle is Australiaâs beloved version of the hot dog, commonly found at fundraisers, Bunnings hardware stores, and community events. It typically features a grilled beef or pork sausage (called a âsnagâ) served on a slice of white sandwich breadânot a bunâtopped with grilled onions and a squirt of tomato sauce or BBQ sauce. The minimalist, no-frills setup is part of its charm, as is the tradition of folding the bread diagonally around the sausage. The Sausage Sizzle is more cultural institution than cuisine, with strong associations to school events, voting days, and weekend DIY trips. Despite its simplicity, Aussies are fiercely loyal to it. Itâs democracy, down under, served with onions.
