Olneyville New York System Hot Wiener

Small veal and pork hot dog topped with seasoned meat sauce, yellow mustard, diced onion, and celery salt, a Rhode Island staple.

Rhode Island’s hot wiener traces to Greek‑run “New York System” counters that appeared in Providence by the late 1920s. The Stevens family opened Olneyville New York System in the 1930s and moved to its current Plainfield St. site in 1953, popularizing the brisk ‘all the way’ service. The dog itself is a small veal‑pork wiener in a steamed bun dressed in order: yellow mustard, seasoned beef sauce, chopped onion, and celery salt. Counters stack buns along the forearm while dressing a dozen at a time, a hallmark of the style. Today the hot wiener remains a late‑night Providence staple and an identity food across Rhode Island. Debate persists over which shop served the first hot wiener, but Olneyville became its best‑known standard‑bearer.
