Norwegian Pølse

Hot dog or sausage (often lamb, pork, beef) served in a potato flatbread (lompe) or bun with mustard, ketchup, remoulade, and garnishes like raw/fried onions and pickled cucumber.

The Norwegian Pølse is a national institution, typically served in one of two ways: in a soft bun or wrapped in lompe—a thin potato flatbread. The sausage itself is usually a mild pork or mixed-meat frankfurter, lightly smoked and steamed or boiled. Toppings vary, but common choices include ketchup, mustard, crispy fried onions, and sometimes shrimp salad or pickles. You’ll find pølser sold at gas stations, convenience stores, ferry terminals, and sporting events throughout Norway. The lompe version is especially iconic and often favored for its portability and unique texture. For Norwegians, eating a pølse is less about indulgence and more about tradition—simple, reliable, and everywhere.
