Kuuma Koira

Unique Finnish hot dog served in a sugar-dusted donut instead of a bun, created in Nokia, Finland in the 1960s with sweet mustard and pickle relish.

The Nokia Kuuma Koira is Finland's most unusual hot dog creation, invented in the 1960s by grill owner Teodor Leppänen in Nokia, Finland. Instead of a traditional bun, the sausage is served inside a sweet, sugar-dusted donut (munkki), creating an unexpected but beloved combination of sweet and savory flavors. This distinctive street food has become a local legend, with Nokia even celebrating International Kuuma Koira Day each March. The cardamom-spiced donut provides a sweet contrast to the savory sausage, typically topped with Finnish sweet mustard and pickle relish. While it might sound bizarre, locals swear by the flavor combination, often enjoying it with milk, beer, or Finnish soda. It's a quirky culinary innovation that perfectly captures Finnish ingenuity and willingness to experiment with traditional foods.
