Kyivska Perepichka

The Kyivska Perepichka is Kyiv's most iconic street snack: a hot dog sausage encased in lightly sweet yeasted dough, deep-fried until golden and crisp. Sold piping hot from a humble kiosk, it's a no-frills Ukrainian classic that blends savory comfort with deep-fried indulgence.

First sold in 1981 from a modest stand near the TSUM department store in central Kyiv, the Kyivska Perepichka quickly became a beloved local institution. The snack's genius lies in its simplicity—combining a juicy sausage with a doughnut-like dough, then frying it into a handheld meal with a satisfyingly crunchy crust. Over the decades, the vendor became a symbol of affordable, everyday Kyiv street food, attracting loyal locals and curious tourists alike. Though often described abroad as a "Ukrainian corn dog" or "Hot Dog Kyivsky," the original name—perepichka—refers specifically to the fried dough casing and has no direct equivalent in other cuisines. Withstanding decades of change, the dish remains a nostalgic favorite and an edible piece of the city's culinary identity.
