Frikandel Speciaal

Skinless deep-fried sausage (chicken, pork, beef) cut lengthwise, doused in mayonnaise, (curry) ketchup, and minced raw onion; a ubiquitous Dutch snack.

The Frikandel Speciaal is a beloved Dutch fast food item that blurs the line between sausage and hot dog. The frikandel itself is a skinless, deep-fried sausage made from finely ground chicken, pork, and beef, known for its smooth, almost pâté-like texture. The “speciaal” version is served split open and topped with curry ketchup, mayonnaise, and raw diced onions. It’s a staple of snack bars (snackbars) throughout the Netherlands and parts of Belgium, often eaten alongside fries and other deep-fried delights. Invented in the 1950s, the frikandel became wildly popular due to its low cost and customizable toppings. It’s fast, funky, and unapologetically Dutch.
